Area of Science:

  • Urogynaecology
  • Female Lower Urinary Tract Disorders

Background:

  • Urethral diverticula are rare in women and can present with a variety of symptoms.
  • Diagnosis is often delayed due to the lack of classical presentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review urethral diverticula diagnosed and treated in a tertiary urogynaecology unit.
  • To analyze patient demographics, symptoms, diagnostic methods, and surgical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 18 women who underwent diverticulectomy between 1996 and 2001.
  • Data collected included demographics, presenting symptoms, diagnostic investigations, operative details, and follow-up outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Median diagnostic delay was 9.5 months.
  • Significant improvement in frequency, terminal dribbling, and recurrent UTIs post-surgery (P < 0.05).
  • No improvement in urgency, urge incontinence, nocturia, or stress incontinence.

Conclusions:

  • Urethral diverticula lack a classical presentation and can be easily overlooked.
  • Video cysto-urethrography is effective for diagnosis and simultaneous lower urinary tract evaluation.
