Summary

Background:

  • Human voice production (phonation) often involves large-amplitude vocal fold oscillations.
  • These oscillations exceed the linear viscoelastic limits of the lamina propria extracellular matrix (ECM).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure vocal fold ECM deformation and failure response under large-strain shear.
  • To formulate and test a novel constitutive model for vocal fold tissue failure.

Main Methods:

  • Sheep vocal fold mucosa specimens were subjected to in vitro torsional deformation.
  • Constant strain rates corresponding to twist rates of 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 rad/s were used.
  • A standard-linear cohesive-zone (SL-CZ) model was implemented using finite-element analysis.

Main Results:

  • Vocal fold ECM exhibited nonlinear stress-strain and rate-dependent failure.
  • Failure strain was observed as low as 0.40 rad.
  • The SL-CZ model successfully captured the rate dependence in preliminary data.

  • The standard-linear cohesive-zone model shows potential for describing vocal fold tissue failure.
  • Further research with more specimens and model refinement is necessary.
