Dacryocystectomy (DCT) is a viable option for chronic dacryocystitis, especially in patients with medical issues or dry eye, and can be an alternative to dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) to avoid complications.

Background:

  • Dacryocystectomy (DCT) was historically considered a mutilating procedure, primarily reserved for lacrimal sac tumors following the development of dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR).
  • This study re-evaluates the contemporary role and indications for DCT in ophthalmic surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present current indications for dacryocystectomy (DCT).
  • To assess the outcomes of DCT in a cohort of patients.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 18 eyes from 11 patients who underwent DCT.
  • Diagnoses included chronic dacryocystitis (confirmed by dacryocystography) and lacrimal sac tumors.

Main Results:

  • Indications for DCT included systemic medical problems (3), dry eye (3), lacrimal sac tumors (2), traumatic dacryocystitis (2), and cutaneous leishmaniasis (1).

  • Successful resolution of dacryocystitis was achieved in 17 of 18 eyes.
  • Lacrimal sac tumors were managed without epiphora; one case of traumatic dacryocystitis recurred.
