Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively examine the independent effect of perceived stress in one menstrual cycle on dysmenorrhoea incidence in the subsequent cycle.
  • To analyze data from a population-based cohort of Chinese women.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study of 1160 menstrual cycles from 388 healthy, nulliparous, newly married women.
  • Daily diaries were used to record perceived stress levels and dysmenorrhoea occurrence.
  • Statistical analysis adjusted for relevant covariates.

Main Results:

  • High stress in the preceding cycle more than doubled the risk of dysmenorrhoea (OR = 2.4).
  • Women with high stress and a history of dysmenorrhoea faced a tenfold increased risk (OR = 10.4).
  • Stress during the follicular phase showed a stronger association with dysmenorrhoea than stress during the luteal phase.

Conclusions:

  • A significant association exists between psychological stress and the incidence of dysmenorrhoea.
  • The impact of stress on dysmenorrhoea is more pronounced in women with a prior history of the condition.
  • Findings suggest stress reduction strategies may be beneficial for managing dysmenorrhoea.
