Background:

  • Osteoid osteomas are benign bone tumors typically presenting with characteristic clinical and radiographic findings.
  • Phalangeal osteoid osteomas in the hand are rare and frequently exhibit atypical features, complicating diagnosis.

Observation:

  • This study reviewed seven cases of phalangeal osteoid osteomas in the hand.
  • Six of the seven patients experienced prolonged misdiagnosis due to unusual presentations.

Findings:

  • Atypical presentations included absence of reactive bone, monoarticular arthritis, clubbing, macrodactyly, painless swelling, and lack of bony lysis.
  • Histological examination also revealed unusual features specific to phalangeal osteoid osteomas.
