Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Cosmetic Science

Background:

  • Melasma is a chronic, recurrent skin condition often undertreated due to limited effective therapies.
  • Historically, monotherapies like hydroquinone and kojic acid were used, but combination therapy is now standard.
  • Melasma is sometimes misperceived as a purely cosmetic issue, hindering proper diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a triple-combination agent for melasma treatment.
  • To assess the long-term effectiveness and impact on quality of life for melasma patients.

Main Methods:

  • Clinical trials were conducted to assess the triple-combination cream (hydroquinone 4%, tretinoin 0.05%, fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%).
  • A long-term study monitored efficacy and safety over 360 days.
  • Quality of life parameters were examined in patients using the combination cream.

Main Results:

  • The triple-combination cream achieved complete or near-complete melasma clearing in 8 weeks.
  • Long-term use (360 days) demonstrated sustained efficacy and safety.
  • Patients reported significant improvements in self-perception and quality of life.

Conclusions:

  • The triple-combination cream is the current gold standard for melasma therapy.
  • This treatment offers rapid and sustained improvement in melasma and significantly enhances patients' quality of life.
  • Adjunctive therapies, like chemical peels, may further enhance treatment outcomes when combined with the triple-combination cream.
