Summary

A rare anterior mediastinal mass was diagnosed as a cavernous hemangioma in a 44-year-old man. Surgical excision proved effective for this extremely rare mediastinal tumor.

Background:

  • Anterior mediastinal masses are rare, presenting diagnostic challenges.
  • Cavernous hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors, typically found in the liver or skin, but exceptionally rare in the mediastinum.

Observation:

  • A 44-year-old male presented with a supraclavicular swelling and an anterior mediastinal mass detected via chest radiography.
  • CT scan revealed a homogeneous, enhancing anterior mediastinal mass with calcifications.
  • Biopsy of the cervical swelling confirmed cavernous hemangioma.

Findings:

  • Surgical exploration via sternotomy identified a 9x7.5x5 cm encapsulated, dark purplish mass in the anterior mediastinum.
  • The mass was adherent to the pericardium and right pleura.
