Summary

Albuterol powder is less effective than isoetharine aerosol for assessing airflow obstruction reversibility in pulmonary function tests. This finding is particularly notable in patients with moderate obstruction, suggesting albuterol powder is not a suitable substitute.

Background:

  • Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is crucial for diagnosing and managing obstructive lung diseases.
  • Assessing reversibility of airflow obstruction is a key component of PFTs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of inhaled albuterol powder compared to isoetharine aerosol in determining airflow obstruction reversibility during routine PFTs.

Main Methods:

  • Spirometric data from subjects receiving albuterol powder (n=42) were compared with those receiving isoetharine aerosol (n=49).
  • Subjects had baseline FEV1/FVC < 70% and FEV1 < 80% predicted.
  • Reversibility was defined as ≥15% improvement in FEV1 or FVC post-bronchodilator.

Main Results:

  • A significantly lower rate of airflow obstruction reversibility was observed with albuterol powder (33%) compared to isoetharine aerosol (61%) (p<0.01).
