Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Endoscopy
  • Medical Procedure Safety

Background:

  • ERCP-related morbidity studies often lack adequate patient follow-up.
  • This study aimed to assess ERCP complication frequency, focusing on cardiopulmonary events.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the incidence and types of complications following ERCP.
  • To identify risk factors associated with ERCP complications, particularly pancreatitis and cardiopulmonary events.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study included 1177 patients undergoing ERCP over two years.
  • Complications were assessed during ERCP and via 30-day follow-up (postal/telephone).

Main Results:

  • The 30-day complication rate was 15.9%, with a 1.0% mortality rate.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Post-ERCP pancreatitis (3.8%), cholangitis (5%), hemorrhage (0.9%), and perforation (1.1%) were observed.
  • Cardiorespiratory complications occurred in 2.3% of patients.
  • Conclusions:

    • ERCP, including therapeutic interventions, carries a significant complication rate.
    • Cardiopulmonary complications were less frequent than anticipated, despite being a focus.
