Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Rheumatoid neutrophilic dermatitis is a rare skin condition associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Understanding its presentation and histology is crucial for diagnosis.

Observation:

  • Three patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatoid neutrophilic dermatitis were studied.
  • The eruption presented as symmetric erythematous papules, plaques, and occasional vesicles on extensor surfaces.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination revealed a dermal neutrophilic infiltrate without vasculitis.
  • Histological features included spongiotic intraepidermal blisters, subepidermal bullae, or papillary neutrophilic microabscesses.

Implications:

  • Rheumatoid neutrophilic dermatitis may represent a spectrum of neutrophilic dermatoses in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  • Accurate diagnosis requires differentiating it from other neutrophilic dermatoses.
