Sheng Ban Recipe (SBR), a traditional Chinese medicine, effectively increases platelet counts in patients experiencing chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia. This oral treatment offers a cost-effective alternative to expensive injections, improving treatment adherence and reducing hemorrhage risk.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Hematology
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Background:

  • Chemotherapy commonly causes bone marrow depression, leading to decreased platelet counts (thrombocytopenia).
  • Current treatments like subcutaneous IL-11 are effective but costly.
  • Oral, affordable, and authentic alternatives for thrombocytopenia are needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine "Sheng Ban Recipe" (SBR) for treating chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia.
  • To compare SBR combined with standard care against standard care alone.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 103 patients with post-chemotherapy thrombocytopenia.
  • Patients received either SBR (1 package twice daily) plus common treatment or common treatment alone.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A 2-week follow-up period was employed.
  • Main Results:

    • The SBR group showed a total efficiency of 70.9% (20% noticeable, 50.9% effective).
    • These results were significantly superior compared to the common treatment group.
    • SBR demonstrated a clear positive impact on platelet recovery.

    Conclusions:

    • Sheng Ban Recipe is an effective treatment for thrombocytopenia following chemotherapy.
    • SBR can potentially reduce the need for platelet transfusions and lower hemorrhage risks.
    • This traditional Chinese medicine offers a viable, cost-effective therapeutic option.
