Summary

This study found no significant differences in plasma or urinary catecholamines between patients with primary fibromyalgia and healthy controls. Catecholamine levels did not correlate with fibromyalgia symptoms or psychological measures.

Background:

  • Primary fibromyalgia (PF) is a chronic pain condition with complex pathophysiology.
  • Alterations in the sympathetic nervous system, including catecholamine levels, are hypothesized in PF.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential elevations of plasma and urinary catecholamines in PF patients compared to healthy controls.
  • To examine correlations between catecholamine levels and clinical/psychological variables in PF.

Main Methods:

  • A blinded study measured plasma and urinary catecholamines in 30 PF patients and 30 healthy controls.
  • Clinical features and psychological measures were assessed in participants.
