  • Dermatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Gynecology

Context:

  • This study analyzes vulvar diseases diagnosed at Ibn Rochd Hospital Centre in Casablanca between 1991 and 2002.
  • A cohort of 785 patients presenting with various vulvar conditions were evaluated.
  • The patient age ranged widely from 2 months to 81 years, with an average age of 31.

Purpose:

  • To identify and categorize the primary causes of vulvar dermatoses in the studied population.
  • To determine the prevalence of infectious versus non-infectious etiologies.
  • To highlight the role of sexually transmitted infections in vulvar pathology.

Summary:

  • Human papillomavirus infection was the leading cause of infectious vulvar pathology (34.77%), followed by vulvovaginal candidiasis (12.99%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Non-infectious vulvar dermatoses accounted for 32.99%, with idiopathic pruritus vulvae (7.7%) and tumor-related conditions (5.6%) being notable.
  • Overall, infectious conditions represented over 50% of cases, predominantly sexually transmitted infections.
  • Impact:

    • Findings underscore the significant burden of infectious vulvar diseases, particularly those related to sexually transmitted infections.
    • Highlights the need for targeted diagnostic and management strategies for vulvar conditions in clinical practice.
    • Provides epidemiological data on vulvar diseases in a North African population, aiding regional health assessments.
