Summary

Rare benign splenic diseases present with vague symptoms and can be difficult to diagnose. While spleen-preserving surgery is possible in some cases, most patients require splenectomy for treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Abdominal Surgery

Background:

  • Benign splenic diseases, excluding trauma and abscess, are rare.
  • Understanding their presentation and management is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, and treatment of rare, non-traumatic, benign splenic conditions.
  • To improve the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for these uncommon splenic pathologies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of eight consecutive patients with benign splenic conditions (excluding trauma/abscess).
  • Analysis of clinical data, diagnostic imaging (CT scans), and surgical outcomes.
  • Conditions included splenic hydatid cyst, pseudocysts, epidermoid cyst, wandering spleen, and ectopic spleen infraction.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Upper abdominal pain and a palpable left upper quadrant mass were the most common findings.
  • CT scans correctly diagnosed splenic pathology in six out of eight patients.
  • Seven patients underwent splenectomy; spleen-sparing surgery was successful in only one patient (12.5%).

Conclusions:

  • Non-traumatic, benign splenic diseases often have subtle symptoms, leading to diagnostic challenges.
  • While spleen-preserving interventions are feasible in select cases, splenectomy remains the predominant surgical approach.
