Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology
  • Drug Development

Background:

  • Inflammatory disorders represent a significant unmet medical need.
  • p38 MAP kinase is a key mediator in inflammatory pathways.
  • Targeting specific inflammatory mediators offers a therapeutic strategy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate SCIO-469, a novel p38 MAP kinase inhibitor, for inflammatory conditions.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of SCIO-469 in clinical trials.

Main Methods:

  • SCIO-469, a small-molecule inhibitor, was developed by Scios Inc.
  • Clinical development included phase IIb trials.
  • The focus was on oral administration for inflammatory disorders.

Main Results:

  • SCIO-469 demonstrated potential as an oral therapy.
  • The drug advanced to phase IIb clinical trials for rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Development was ongoing as of July 2004.

Conclusions:

  • SCIO-469 showed promise as a p38 MAP kinase inhibitor for inflammatory diseases.
  • Further clinical evaluation was warranted based on early trial data.
