Abstract:
In uremic patients, secondary hyperparathyroidism is caused by disturbances of calcium and phosphorus metabolism such as elevated plasma phosphate and reduced production of active vitamin D metabolites. Although the etiologies for complications in renal failure are multiple, there is evidence suggesting that increased circulating parathyroid hormone associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism may play important roles in uremic syndrome.
