Summary

Composting sewage sludge alters lead (Pb) chemical forms, increasing less toxic fractions. This process reduces the overall contamination and bioavailability of heavy metal lead in the compost.

  • A four-stage Tessier sequential extraction method was used to analyze Pb speciation.
  • Total Pb concentrations and five Pb fractions (exchangeable, bound to carbonates, bound to Fe-Mn oxides, bound to organic matter and sulphides, residual) were measured.
