Summary

Medical students who attended preparation courses for the USMLE Step 1 had lower scores and GPAs. However, academic performance, not preparation method, ultimately determined USMLE Step 1 success.

Background:

  • Many medical students utilize commercial preparation courses for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1.
  • The effectiveness of these preparation methods in relation to student academic achievement warrants investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between USMLE Step 1 performance, preparation course attendance, and overall academic achievement in medical school.
  • To determine if preparation method or prior academic success is a stronger predictor of USMLE Step 1 scores.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 148 junior medical students assessing their USMLE Step 1 preparation strategies.
  • Data collected included student USMLE Step 1 scores, preparation course attendance, and medical school grades (GPA).

  • Of the 100 respondents, 32 had participated in preparation courses.
  • Preparation course attendees demonstrated significantly lower USMLE Step 1 scores and second-year GPAs compared to non-attendees (p < 0.05).
  • Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that preparation method was not a significant factor when controlling for second-year GPA (p = 0.71).

Conclusions:

  • USMLE Step 1 performance is closely linked to a student's general academic achievement throughout medical school.
  • The type of preparation method used for USMLE Step 1 does not appear to be a significant determinant of exam success when academic history is considered.
