Summary
Urinary incontinence (UI) affects many frail older adults, but research is lacking to guide nursing care. More studies are urgently needed to improve continence care for this vulnerable population.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Nursing Science
- Urology
Background:
- Frail elderly individuals experience a high prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI).
- Limited research exists to guide nursing interventions for UI in this vulnerable demographic.
- Effective continence care for frail elders remains an underserved area in geriatric nursing.
Purpose of the Study:
- To consolidate existing knowledge on UI within the frail elderly population.
- To identify critical research gaps and propose future research directions.
- To inform evidence-based nursing practices for incontinent frail older adults.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review and analysis of current literature on UI in frail elders.
- Identification of knowledge deficits in intervention effectiveness, risk factors, and outcome measures.
- Exploration of challenges and barriers to conducting research in long-term care settings.
Main Results:
- Significant gaps identified in understanding intervention efficacy, caregiver roles, and management models for UI in frail elders.
- Prevalence, risk factors, and the reliability/validity of outcome measures for UI require further investigation.
- Research in long-term care settings faces unique logistical and ethical challenges.
Conclusions:
- Despite research challenges, there is a critical need for studies to guide nursing care for incontinent frail elders.
- Future research should address identified knowledge gaps to enhance continence care across all healthcare settings.
- Evidence-based strategies are essential to improve the quality of life for frail elders with UI.
