Summary

Effective newborn circumcision pain management involves analgesia, not just oral sucrose. Combining dorsal and ring blocks with sucrose significantly reduced pain scores in a recent study.

Background:

Newborn circumcision is a common procedure.
Pain management during circumcision is crucial for infant well-being.
Current interventions vary, necessitating efficacy assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate current pain interventions for newborn circumcision.
To determine the most effective analgesia methods for reducing procedural pain.

Main Methods:

Pain was assessed using the FLACC scale during and after circumcision.
Interventions included various analgesia types and combinations.
Data were recorded on standardized pain assessment forms.

Main Results:

Unmanaged pain was highest in newborns receiving no analgesia.
Combined dorsal block, ring block, and oral sucrose yielded the lowest pain scores.
Oral sucrose alone was insufficient but offered some benefit with other analgesics.

Conclusions:

Newborn circumcision policy changed to require analgesia.
Concentrated oral sucrose alone is no longer the sole recommended intervention.
Multimodal analgesia is recommended for effective pain control.
