Depressed patients, especially those with melancholia, show abnormal flash visual evoked responses (FVER). This neurophysiological abnormality, a negative deviation in FVER, is most pronounced in elderly melancholic individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Clinical Neurophysiology

    Background:

    • Previous research indicated abnormal flash visual evoked responses (FVER) in melancholic patients.
    • Replication of these findings is crucial for understanding the neurophysiological underpinnings of depression.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To replicate and further investigate abnormal FVER in new groups of depressed patients with melancholia.
    • To compare FVER abnormalities across different age groups of melancholic patients and those without melancholia.

    Main Methods:

    • Flash visual evoked responses (FVER) were measured in three groups of melancholic patients (pilot, older replication, younger replication) and two control groups (depressed without melancholia, nondepressed neuropsychiatric).
    • A computer-based quantified neurophysiological technique with mapping was employed for data analysis.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • All melancholic patient groups exhibited a statistically significant negative deviation in FVER (224-300 msec poststimulus) in the centroparietal region compared to controls.
    • Depressed patients without melancholia showed a similar but less pronounced FVER alteration.
    • Nondepressed neuropsychiatric patients displayed no FVER abnormality.

    Conclusions:

    • A gradient of FVER abnormality is present in depressed patients.
    • This abnormality is most prominent in elderly melancholic patients but not exclusive to them.
