Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Panic disorder is a common anxiety disorder.
  • Alcohol dependence is a significant public health concern.
  • Comorbidity between panic disorder and alcohol dependence is frequently observed but not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the lifetime and current prevalence of alcohol dependence in patients with panic disorder.
  • To compare these prevalence rates with the general population.
  • To identify risk factors associated with alcohol dependence in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 100 patients diagnosed with panic disorder was assessed.
  • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition, Revised (DSM-III-R) criteria were used for diagnosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lifetime and current alcohol dependence were evaluated.
  • Main Results:

    • Twenty-four percent of patients had a history of alcohol dependence (lifetime prevalence).
    • Only one percent met criteria for current alcohol dependence.
    • Lifetime prevalence in this sample exceeded general population rates, notably in women.
    • Childhood anxiety disorders, social phobia, and major depression were associated with higher alcohol dependence rates.

    Conclusions:

    • Panic disorder patients exhibit elevated lifetime alcohol dependence, especially women.
    • Comorbid conditions like social phobia and depression are linked to increased alcohol dependence risk.
    • Clinical attention to alcohol use is warranted in panic disorder treatment.
