Summary

Contrast-enhanced 3D MR voiding urethrography (CE 3D MRVU) is a viable imaging technique for evaluating urethral strictures. This method accurately identifies urethral pathologies and obstructive causes of impaired flow.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Urethral strictures and other obstructive pathologies can significantly impair urethral flow.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment planning and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of contrast-enhanced 3D MR voiding urethrography (CE 3D MRVU) in diagnosing urethral strictures.
  • To assess the diagnostic performance of CE 3D MRVU compared to conventional imaging modalities.

Main Methods:

  • CE 3D MRVU was performed on 5 healthy volunteers and 18 patients with suspected urethral disease.
  • Intravenous gadolinium contrast was administered, followed by three consecutive 3D MRVU acquisitions during voiding.
  • Image data were reconstructed for visual analysis and compared with retrograde urethrography and urethroscopy in a subset of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • CE 3D MRVU provided technically sufficient image quality in healthy volunteers, demonstrating normal urethral anatomy.
  • The technique correctly identified urethral strictures and other obstructive pathologies in patients.
  • Diagnostic findings were consistent across CE 3D MRVU, retrograde urethrography, and urethroscopy.

Conclusions:

  • CE 3D MRVU is an effective imaging modality for the diagnosis of urethral strictures.
  • It accurately identifies various urethral pathologies causing impaired flow.
  • CE 3D MRVU offers a valuable non-invasive option for evaluating urethral conditions.
