Summary

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy can reverse chronic hypercapnia in some sleep apnea patients. This treatment may improve inspiratory muscle function, reducing the work of breathing.

Background:

  • Sleep apnea syndrome involves respiratory pauses during sleep leading to desaturation.
  • A subset of patients with sleep apnea exhibit chronic alveolar hypoventilation.
  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

Observation:

  • This study observed two patients with sleep apnea and chronic hypercapnia.
  • CPAP therapy was administered to these patients.
  • Chronic hypercapnia was monitored during long-term CPAP treatment.

Findings:

  • In both patients, CPAP therapy successfully reversed chronic hypercapnia.
  • Normalization of hypercapnia occurred after three and five months of treatment, respectively.
