Extremely prolonged neuromuscular blockade after rocuronium: a case report.

Acta anaesthesiologica Scandinavica·2009

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Neurology
  • Pain Management

Background:

  • Interstitial cystitis is a chronic, painful bladder disorder with diverse causes and limited treatment options.
  • Neurogenic inflammation is increasingly implicated in interstitial cystitis pathogenesis.
  • Neuromodulation via spinal cord stimulation is being explored for refractory cases.

Observation:

  • A 66-year-old woman with a 9-year history of interstitial cystitis experienced persistent, severe symptoms.
  • Conventional medical treatments failed to alleviate her urinary incontinence, urgency, and suprapubic pain.
  • She underwent implantation of a retrograde epidural spinal cord stimulator.

Findings:

  • Following implantation, the patient reported an 80% reduction in pain.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Symptomatic improvement was sustained long-term without complications.
  • This suggests efficacy in managing refractory interstitial cystitis.
  • Implications:

    • Retrograde epidural spinal cord stimulation presents a minimally invasive therapeutic option for interstitial cystitis.
    • This approach may benefit patients unresponsive to standard treatments.
    • Further research into neuromodulation for interstitial cystitis is warranted.
