Summary

Pulmonary sequestration (PS) can develop superimposed fungal infections, particularly Aspergillus. This study highlights the need to consider fungal colonization in PS patients to determine its true incidence.

Area of Science:

  • Medicine
  • Pulmonology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Pulmonary sequestration (PS) is a rare congenital lung malformation.
  • Symptoms of PS are typically linked to secondary bacterial infections.

Observation:

  • This study reviewed 19 cases of intralobar PS operated on over 20 years.
  • A significant proportion (4 out of 6) of patients operated on in the last decade had intralobar PS with Aspergillus.

Findings:

  • Aspergillosis in PS manifested as aspergilloma with bronchial communication in one case.
  • Preoperative diagnosis of aspergillosis was possible in one patient via a positive precipitins test.
  • Pathological examination confirmed aspergillosis in two additional patients.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fungal colonization, specifically aspergillosis, is an under-recognized complication of pulmonary sequestration.
  • Increased awareness and diagnostic consideration are necessary to accurately assess the incidence of PS aspergillosis.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis and optimal management of this rare entity.
