Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Transfusion Medicine

Background:

  • Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) poses a significant threat to immunocompromised individuals.
  • Delayed diagnosis due to non-specific symptoms and lack of awareness contributes to high mortality rates.

Observation:

  • This communication reports three clinical cases of TA-GVHD.
  • The study highlights the critical need for increased awareness of TA-GVHD.

Findings:

  • TA-GVHD is frequently fatal, with over 90% of patients succumbing to refractory infections.
  • Irradiated blood products represent the sole effective preventive strategy against TA-GVHD.

Implications:

  • Ensuring the availability of irradiated blood products in centers managing immunocompromised patients is crucial for TA-GVHD prevention.
