Gestational primary hyperparathyroidism is difficult to diagnose and carries high complication risks. Surgical intervention in the second trimester offers a safe and effective treatment for pregnant patients, improving maternal and fetal outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Obstetrics
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Gestational primary hyperparathyroidism (GPH) poses diagnostic challenges and significant maternal/fetal complication risks.
  • Complication rates in GPH are high, affecting 67% of mothers and 80% of fetuses.
  • Prompt, effective therapeutic measures can reduce these complication rates significantly.

Observation:

  • A case report of a pregnant woman at 16 weeks gestation with asymptomatic hypercalcemia due to a solitary parathyroid adenoma.
  • Conservative management failed to resolve the hypercalcemia.
  • Surgical intervention was performed during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Findings:

  • The surgical treatment for the parathyroid adenoma was successful.
  • The postoperative follow-up was uneventful for both the mother and the neonate.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case supports surgical intervention as a viable option for GPH.
  • Implications:

    • Surgical treatment in the second trimester is a safe and effective alternative to conservative management for GPH.
    • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for mitigating GPH complications.
    • This approach can lead to favorable maternal and fetal outcomes, reducing risks associated with untreated hyperparathyroidism during pregnancy.
