Contrast sensitivity at disease onset predicts future reading fluency in patients with macular disease (MD). Other clinical factors like visual acuity do not reliably predict reading outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if baseline clinical variables predict reading ability in macular disease patients.
  • To identify early indicators of reading fluency in individuals with macular disease.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 25 macular disease patients within 4 weeks of second eye symptom onset.
  • Recorded clinical and demographic data at baseline and 3-12 months later.
  • Used odds ratios to assess predictive value for reading fluency and speed changes.

Main Results:

  • Baseline contrast sensitivity significantly predicted future fluent reading (OR, 2.40).
