Summary

Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is a serious inherited metabolic disorder. CT scans reveal characteristic brain lucidity that improves with dietary treatment, aiding diagnosis in newborns.

Background:

  • Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder with severe neonatal complications.
  • Neuroradiologic findings in MSUD are not well-documented, complicating early diagnosis.

Observation:

  • This study analyzed CT scans in three MSUD patients (two classical, one intermediate variant) before and after dietary intervention.
  • CT scans at diagnosis showed significant lucidity in both white and grey matter, especially the pallidum.

Findings:

  • Abnormal cerebral lucidity on CT scans is a consistent finding in both acute classical MSUD and intermediate variants.
  • These CT abnormalities demonstrated favorable evolution and correlated with clinical improvement following dietary treatment.
