Summary

Sustained hyperhomocysteinemia (HHCy) impairs nitric oxide (NO) mediated cavernosal smooth muscle relaxation in rabbits. This dysfunction is linked to increased oxidative stress, suggesting a role for homocysteine in erectile dysfunction.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of sustained HHCy on rabbit corpus cavernosum smooth muscle function.
  • To characterize cavernosal responses in a rabbit model of HHCy induced by a methionine-enriched diet.

Main Methods:

  • Rabbits were fed a methionine-supplemented diet for 4 weeks to induce HHCy; control rabbits received a standard diet.
  • Cavernosal smooth muscle strips were assessed for relaxation responses to carbachol, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and electrical-field stimulation (EFS).
  • Tissue cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and superoxide production were quantified.
