Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Danshen, a traditional Chinese herb, is a common treatment for acute ischemic stroke in China.
  • The effectiveness of Danshen in improving post-stroke disability requires rigorous evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the quality of randomized control trials (RCTs) on Danshen for acute ischemic stroke.
  • To evaluate Danshen's effectiveness in improving patient disability compared to other treatments.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of RCTs identified through comprehensive literature searches.
  • Primary outcome: disability improvement measured by the Chinese National Disability Scale (CNDS) at two weeks.
  • Included trials compared Danshen preparations against placebo, Western, or herbal medicines.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Thirty-three Danshen control trials were identified; none were placebo-controlled.
  • Eleven RCTs met inclusion criteria but were of poor quality.
  • Danshen was inferior or not significantly different in efficacy compared to nine other medicines, including Buflomedil and Naloxone.

Conclusions:

  • Existing RCTs on Danshen for acute ischemic stroke lack placebo controls and are of poor quality.
  • There is no substantial evidence to support Danshen's effectiveness in improving post-stroke disability.
  • Comparative reviews do not support Danshen's benefit for disability improvement after acute ischemic stroke.
