Summary

Gabapentin can cause dystonia, a movement disorder affecting muscles in the neck and arms. This adverse effect is reversible upon discontinuing the medication, as seen in a case study of essential tremor treatment.

Background:

  • Essential tremor is a common neurological condition.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old woman with essential tremor developed dystonia after starting gabapentin.
  • The dystonic reaction involved neck and arm muscles and resolved upon gabapentin withdrawal.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced a recurrence of dystonia upon re-challenge with gabapentin.
  • Causality assessment indicated a high probability of gabapentin-induced dystonia.

Implications:

  • Gabapentin, despite its common use, can induce dystonic reactions.
  • Dystonia induced by gabapentin is reversible after drug discontinuation.
