Background:

  • Acute ischemic renal damage can lead to significant renal edema and plasma protein accumulation.
  • The role of fibrin deposition in the pathogenesis of ischemic renal injury is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of anticoagulation on renal edema and plasma protein accumulation in a rat model of acute ischemic renal damage.
  • To determine the impact of fibrin deposition on the development of renal edema following ischemia.

Main Methods:

  • Rats underwent unilateral renal artery occlusion followed by reperfusion.
  • Kidney weight, plasma protein content (125-I-fibrinogen and 131-I-albumin), and renal morphology were assessed.
  • Animals were pretreated with saline, a low-effect heparin analogue, standard heparin, or warfarin.

Main Results:

  • Ischemic damage caused significant increases in kidney weight and protein content.
  • Heparin and warfarin treatments markedly attenuated these changes.
  • Microscopic examination revealed reduced fibrin deposition in kidneys treated with heparin or warfarin.

Conclusions:

  • Anticoagulation with heparin or warfarin effectively reduces renal edema and protein extravasation in ischemic acute kidney injury.
  • Fibrin deposition plays a critical role in the development of renal edema associated with ischemic renal damage.
