Summary

Uveitis in psoriasis patients often presents later in life and can be prolonged and bilateral. These patients, especially those with HLA-B27, frequently require oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with potential systemic manifestations.
  • Uveitis, inflammation of the uvea, can occur in patients with psoriasis.
  • Understanding the clinical characteristics of uveitis in psoriasis is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To delineate the clinical features of uveitis in patients diagnosed with psoriasis.
  • To compare these features against those of patients with idiopathic anterior uveitis and HLA-B27-associated anterior uveitis.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed.
  • Retrospective review of 36 patients with uveitis and psoriasis.
  • Comparison with 30 patients with idiopathic or HLA-B27-associated anterior uveitis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Uveitis in psoriasis patients presented at a significantly older mean age (44.6-52.7 years) compared to nonpsoriatic groups (35.7-35.9 years).
  • Uveitis in this cohort was often bilateral (62%) and prolonged (mean 11.2 weeks).
  • HLA-B27 positive psoriasis patients, and psoriasis patients overall, showed a higher requirement for oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Conclusions:

  • Uveitis associated with psoriasis exhibits distinct clinical characteristics.
  • Further epidemiological research is warranted to clarify the association between psoriasis (without arthritis) and uveitis.
