Summary

A novel finding in ophthalmology: exfoliative material appeared on intraocular lenses years after cataract surgery. This occurred in patients with an open posterior capsule, a previously undocumented phenomenon.

  • Long-term complications of IOLs are extensively studied, but new phenomena can emerge.

Observation:

  • Three cases presented with exfoliative material on the posterior IOL surface.
  • This material appeared years after initial surgery.
  • No such material was observed pre-operatively.

Findings:

  • All affected eyes had an open posterior capsule.
  • The development of exfoliative material was observed in the presence of an open posterior capsule.
  • This specific post-operative complication has not been previously reported.

Implications:
