Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Oncology
  • Colorectal Surgery

Background:

  • Synchronous colorectal carcinomas present diagnostic challenges and clinical significance.
  • Early detection and accurate preoperative diagnosis are crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the frequency and characteristics of synchronous colorectal adenocarcinomas.
  • To assess the diagnostic yield of colonoscopy and double-contrast barium enema for synchronous cancers.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 283 patients with primary colorectal adenocarcinomas.
  • Review of diagnostic methods including colonoscopy and double-contrast barium enema.
  • Intraoperative findings and surgical interventions were documented.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Synchronous adenocarcinomas were identified in 6 patients (2.12%), totaling 12 tumors.
  • Colonoscopy and double-contrast barium enema detected synchronous cancers in 66.6% of cases.
  • Secondary cancers demonstrated a significantly more favorable stage and better histologic grade than index cancers.

Conclusions:

  • Synchronous colorectal cancers are relatively infrequent but clinically important.
  • Comprehensive preoperative evaluation is essential for identifying all colorectal lesions.
  • Early detection of secondary tumors may lead to improved patient outcomes due to favorable staging.
