Summary

This case study highlights a rare malignant melanoma patient who experienced long-term local recurrence and metastases following radiation therapy. Despite initial treatment in 1968, the patient achieved recurrence-free survival for over 31 years.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Dermatology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant melanoma is a significant skin cancer with variable patient outcomes.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical excision offer a cure for approximately 75% of German patients.
  • However, over 20% succumb to distant melanoma metastases, while some exhibit long-term local recurrence without distant spread.

Observation:

  • A female patient with nevus-associated melanoma received curative-intent X-ray radiation (100 Gy) in 1968.
  • Over 31 years, she developed multiple phases of in-transit and satellite metastases, along with ilioinguinal lymph node metastasis.
  • Notably, the patient has remained recurrence-free since 1999.

Findings:

  • This case presents unusual biological behavior of malignant melanoma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient's prolonged course of local recurrence and eventual remission challenges typical melanoma progression patterns.
  • The long-term follow-up underscores the unpredictable nature of melanoma metastasis and response to treatment.
  • Implications:

    • This case study offers insights into the long-term management of complex melanoma cases.
    • It reflects significant shifts in melanoma treatment paradigms over the past four decades.
    • Understanding such unusual cases can inform future therapeutic strategies and prognostic assessments for malignant melanoma.
