HELLP syndrome, a rare pregnancy complication, can cause liver rupture. Liver transplantation offers good outcomes for severe cases, with 75% survival in a national review.

  • HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, Low Platelets) is a severe pregnancy complication linked to preeclampsia.

  • Optimal management and transplantation indications for complicated HELLP syndrome remain unclear.

Observation:

  • A national review analyzed deceased donor liver transplants for HELLP syndrome (October 1987-November 2003).
  • Eight patients underwent liver transplantation for HELLP syndrome complications.
  • Data included outcomes from the United Network for Organ Sharing database.

Findings:

  • Six of eight (75%) patients survived following liver transplantation for HELLP syndrome.
