Summary

This study modified the projection reconstruction (PR) sequence k-space trajectory to reduce undersampling artifacts. The new method samples more mid-frequencies, significantly lowering artifacts, especially with limited data.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Background:

  • Undersampling artifacts are a common issue in projection reconstruction (PR) sequences.
  • Reducing these artifacts is crucial for image quality and diagnostic accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a modified PR k-space trajectory to minimize undersampling artifacts.
  • To enhance image quality in PR sequences with a limited number of repetitions.

Main Methods:

  • Modified the standard PR sequence by sampling one complete and two partial spokes per repetition.
  • Reduced the k-space extent of sampled peripheral spatial frequencies.
  • Compared the modified PR with standard PR using point spread function (PSF) analysis, phantom, and in vivo imaging.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The modified PR trajectory demonstrated reduced undersampling artifacts compared to standard PR.
  • PSF analysis confirmed a decrease in artifacts with a slight reduction in spatial resolution.
  • Phantom and in vivo results validated the improved performance of the modified method.

Conclusions:

  • The modified PR trajectory effectively reduces undersampling artifacts, particularly in scenarios with limited projections.
  • This technique offers a valuable improvement for PR imaging where artifact reduction is critical.
