Summary

Open ureterocalicostomy remains an effective treatment for complex ureteropelvic junction obstruction. This study shows excellent obstruction relief and improved kidney function, even with evolving indications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate contemporary outcomes of open ureterocalicostomy.
  • To assess changes in indications and results for this procedure in modern practice.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 11 patients undergoing open ureterocalicostomy (July 1991-February 2004).
  • Indications included primary UPJ obstruction, failed balloon incision, ureteral strictures, and obliterated UPJ.

Main Results:

  • All patients achieved relief from obstruction.

  • Differential renal function improved significantly (54.6% to 60.1%, P <0.05).
