Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Gastric emptying is crucial for nutrient absorption and can be influenced by physiological changes.
  • The peripartum period involves significant hormonal and physical shifts that may affect gastrointestinal function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of pregnancy on gastric emptying rates.
  • To establish baseline gastric emptying in the peripartum period and compare it to a non-pregnant state.

Main Methods:

  • Applied potential tomography was utilized to sequentially measure gastric emptying.
  • Measurements were taken in 10 healthy women at 37-40 weeks gestation, 2-3 days postpartum, and after 6 weeks postpartum (control).

Main Results:

  • Mean times to 50% gastric emptying were 15 min (gestation), 11 min (postpartum), and 15 min (control).
  • No statistically significant changes in gastric emptying were observed across the measured periods.
  • Power analysis confirmed the study design was adequate to detect an 8-minute difference.

Conclusions:

  • Pregnancy does not appear to cause a statistically significant alteration in gastric emptying in healthy women.
  • Further research may be warranted to explore subtle changes or effects in specific patient populations.
