Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively investigate the incidence and duration of hoarseness after short-term tracheal intubation.
  • To identify patient and anesthetic factors associated with postoperative hoarseness.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study involving 235 adult patients undergoing general anesthesia.
  • 167 patients received tracheal intubation; postoperative hoarseness was assessed.
  • Regression analysis was used to identify contributing factors.

Main Results:

  • 54% of intubated patients (32%) reported hoarseness postoperatively.
  • Most cases (all but five) resolved within 7 days.
  • Two patients developed vocal cord granulomata, experiencing hoarseness for 54 and 99 days, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Short-term tracheal intubation results in a low incidence of prolonged or permanent hoarseness.
  • Specific patient and anesthetic factors significantly influence the occurrence of hoarseness.
