  • Measurement of tooth widths from 143 dental casts using a sliding caliper.
  • Application of Bolton analysis to determine anterior and total tooth width ratios.
  • Statistical analysis including Student's t-test and ANOVA.

  • No significant sex-based differences were found in anterior or total tooth width ratios.
  • Both anterior and total tooth width ratios were significantly greater in subjects with dental crowding.
  • Differences in tooth mass excess between upper and lower arches were observed but not clinically significant (<1 mm).

Conclusions:

  • While crowded arches exhibit larger tooth width ratios, the differences are minimal.
  • These findings suggest that tooth width ratios may not be a major clinical concern in differentiating crowded from noncrowded arches.
