Summary

Conditioning increases salivation but decreases hunger, showing these responses are loosely coupled. Salivation reflects learned associations, not always current hunger states.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Physiology

Background:

  • Salivation is a preparatory response often associated with hunger.
  • The relationship between learned salivation and subjective hunger is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between conditioned salivation and subjective hunger levels.
  • To determine if increased salivation correlates with increased hunger after conditioning.

Main Methods:

  • Classical conditioning was used to elicit salivation responses.
  • Subjects underwent conditioning procedures involving cues (CSs) and food intake (US).
  • Salivation flow and subjective hunger levels were measured before and after conditioning.

Main Results:

  • A significant increase in salivation flow was observed post-conditioning.
  • Subjective hunger levels significantly decreased after conditioning.
  • No significant correlation was found between salivation flow and hunger levels.

Conclusions:

  • Salivation and subjective hunger appear to be loosely coupled systems.
  • Conditioned salivation reflects learning history and associative strength, not solely current hunger.
  • Conditioning of preparatory responses depends on cue-food probability and unconditioned stimulus intensity.
