Summary

Background:

Amiodarone is a widely prescribed Class III antiarrhythmic agent for managing ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias.
Despite its established efficacy, amiodarone is associated with numerous adverse effects.
However, documented cases of amiodarone-induced anaphylaxis are notably absent from medical literature.

Observation:

A 77-year-old patient experienced anaphylaxis following the administration of intravenous amiodarone.
The diagnosis of anaphylaxis was confirmed through specific diagnostic markers, including elevated mast cell tryptase levels.
Skin testing further corroborated the hypersensitivity reaction to amiodarone.

Findings:

This case represents the first documented instance of confirmed anaphylaxis to amiodarone.
The findings confirm that amiodarone can elicit a severe anaphylactic reaction.

Implications:

Clinicians should be aware of the potential for anaphylaxis as a rare adverse effect of amiodarone.
This case underscores the importance of considering anaphylaxis in patients presenting with acute hypersensitivity reactions during or after amiodarone administration.
Further investigation into the mechanisms of amiodarone-induced anaphylaxis may be warranted.
