Area of Science:

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Child Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Context:

  • Investigated comorbidity in 50 children diagnosed with high-functioning pervasive developmental disorder (HFPDD).
  • Utilized questionnaires to assess coexisting clinical disorders.
  • Assessed cognitive function, noting a majority had intelligence quotients below 90.

Purpose:

  • To determine the prevalence of comorbid conditions in children with HFPDD.
  • To identify common coexisting disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), learning problems, motor control issues, sensory processing abnormalities, and anxiety disorders.
  • To highlight the diagnostic challenges posed by the diverse symptom presentation of HFPDD.

Summary:

  • 72% of children with HFPDD met the criteria for AD/HD.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Frequent comorbidities included learning difficulties, motor control problems, abnormal sensory responses, and anxiety.
  • The broad spectrum of HFPDD symptoms can lead to diagnostic overshadowing by coexisting conditions.
  • Impact:

    • Suggests a high rate of undiagnosed or misdiagnosed coexisting disorders in children with HFPDD.
    • Emphasizes the need for comprehensive diagnostic evaluations in children presenting with HFPDD.
    • Underscores the importance of recognizing the heterogeneity of HFPDD and its common comorbidities for accurate diagnosis and intervention.
