Summary

Flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) tendinopathy is characterized by degenerative tendinosis. Surgical debridement of this condition provides excellent pain relief for patients unresponsive to conservative treatments.

Background:

  • Flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) tendinopathy is a debilitating condition affecting wrist function.
  • Nonsurgical management often fails to resolve symptoms, necessitating alternative treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the underlying pathology of FCU tendinopathy.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of surgical debridement for refractory FCU tendinopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Histological examination of excised FCU tendon specimens from five patients.
  • Surgical debridement of affected FCU tendons in patients with failed conservative treatment.
  • Clinical follow-up of at least 12 months for four patients.

Main Results:

  • All examined FCU tendon specimens exhibited degenerative tendinosis with angiofibroblastic hyperplasia.
  • This pathology mirrors that seen in tennis elbow and rotator cuff tendinopathies.
  • Surgical excision of the pathologic tissue resulted in excellent pain relief for all treated patients.

Conclusions:

  • FCU tendinopathy shares a similar degenerative tendinosis pathology with other extrasynovial tendons.
  • Surgical debridement is an effective treatment for FCU tendinopathy when conservative measures fail.
