Summary

Open reduction surgery for neglected posterior elbow dislocations significantly improves elbow joint mobility. This study found substantial gains in flexion and range of motion, even years after the initial injury.

  • Late intervention for these injuries can lead to persistent joint stiffness and functional deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the intermediate- to long-term outcomes of open reduction for neglected posterior elbow dislocations.
  • To assess the impact of surgical intervention on elbow joint mobility and range of motion.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 24 patients undergoing late open reduction for posterior elbow dislocation.
  • Surgical approach involved posterior access with V-Y muscleplasty, followed by 2-3 weeks of immobilization.
  • Preoperative and postoperative elbow joint mobility, including arc of flexion and contracture, were measured.

  • Mean interval from injury to surgery was 7.9 months.
  • Significant improvement in the average arc of elbow flexion (from 17° to 82°) and maximum flexion (from 27° to 122°).

  • Late open reduction is an effective treatment for neglected posterior elbow dislocations, restoring significant joint function.
  • Surgical timing and patient-specific factors did not correlate with the degree of achieved elbow motion post-surgery.
  • The procedure offers a viable option for improving mobility in chronic, untreated elbow dislocations.
