Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Depression: Overview

Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...
Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Summary

Intimate partner violence (IPV) increases risks for depression and suicide. Nurses should document IPV carefully, and consistent social support can help buffer against suicidal thoughts and attempts.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Public Health
  • Mental Health

Background:

  • Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant risk factor for severe mental health issues, including depression, suicidal ideation, and homicide.
  • Clients experiencing IPV often face complex challenges requiring specialized care and support.
  • The impact of IPV on mental well-being necessitates effective interventions and documentation strategies within healthcare settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the critical risks associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) exposure.
  • To emphasize the essential role of nurses in documenting IPV disclosures.
  • To underscore the importance of social support systems in mitigating suicidal ideation among IPV survivors.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical best practices for IPV documentation.
  • Analysis of the impact of social support on mental health outcomes for IPV survivors.
  • Synthesis of nursing interventions for clients exposed to IPV.

Main Results:

  • Clients exposed to IPV face substantial risks for depression, suicide, and homicide.
  • Nurses play a crucial role in nonjudgmental, clear documentation of physical and emotional findings, including direct client statements.
  • Consistent social support, including listening and acceptance, is vital for buffering suicidal ideation and attempts.

Conclusions:

  • Effective nursing documentation of IPV is essential for client safety and care.
  • Robust social support networks significantly reduce the risk of suicidal behaviors in IPV survivors.
  • Interdisciplinary approaches are needed to address the multifaceted consequences of IPV.
